We provide development management, government relations, & nonprofit administration services to Owámniyomni Okhódayapi (formerly Friends of the Falls), in coordination with Mni Sota Dakota Nations, the City of Minneapolis, and its Park Board. Shelley Buck leads the initiative as President of Owámniyomni Okhódayapi.
Educating through media and art were central to public engagement for the Falls Initiative. This 8-minute highlight video, which features content from the first Falls Initiative Community Conversation, "A Story Disrupted: Indigenous Perspectives," contributed to the Falls Initiative's storytelling and knowledge sharing through media. Footage was shot in studio at AV For You, and the video was produced by Studio Civic for Owámniyomni Okhódayapi (formerly Friends of the Falls).
Community Conversations were listening and learning opportunities for all stakeholders. We spoke at this one about the unique path to implementing the Falls Initiative, starting at timestamp 32:55:00.
The potential of immersive technologies to transform public engagement has been a topic on our radar since 2016 when our founder piloted municipal applications of VR for the City of Minneapolis.
Our pitch to pilot an immersive gallery was embraced by Owámniyomni Okhódayapi (formerly Friends of the Falls), the NPC, and the engagement team, who worked together to curate a compelling multimedia gallery experience that was brought to life by REM5 VR.
The immersive gallery shares the Falls story and the guiding principles of the Native Partnership Council as depicted through art and photography with a national and even international audience, since it is accessible regardless of geographic location, time, or physical ability. In addition to experiencing the immersive exhibition and media content within it, visitors to the gallery can also step into 360 experiences of the project site.
The immersive exhibit is accessible on any computer from the Friends of the Falls website, here.

Studio Civic prepared The Falls Initiative Community Engagement Plan in collaboration with the entire engagement team, and reflecting the guidance of the Native Partnership Council. It was approved by the elected bodies of the City of Minneapolis & the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board as part of the MOU between them and Friends of the Falls. The Falls Initiative has at its heart a commitment to truth and reconciliation, and a mission to educate as well as engage the broader community. The project team believes that an organized and transparent process centered on Native leadership will result in an authentic opportunity for healing, and lays the groundwork to create a place of great significance.
